Meet the Officers of NALC

The Officers of NALC are elected annually. There are : a President, up to three Vice-Presidents and a Treasurer. The election takes place at the AGM.
President : Ivor Smith

Ivor Smith was diagnosed and had his laryngectomy when he was only 48 and had his operation at the city General Hospital, Carlisle. He spent most of his working life as a Master Butcher and ran his own business for about 5 years.

From having his laryngectomy just over 8 years ago, he became very active in the Border Lost Chord Club in Carlisle and, at present, serves as the Club Secretary.

Ivor has, over the past 4 years, made the long trip toLondon to attend the national meetings and has also attended the scottish meetings.

He is a big believer in the Awareness Capaign and has locally given speeches to schools, clubs and St John's Ambulance Brigades etc. He has appeared on local radio , several times in the local press and has even managed to get an article in the national press. He has also had a few pieces published in CLAN.
Treasurer : John Williams

John Williams was elected as Honorary Treasurer of NALC in May 1991 and has held that position to the present day. prior to that he served as a Vice-President from 1987.

In November 1976, John had his laryngectomy at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. He joined the "We Speak Again" club shortly after its formation. After a period as Treasurer and then Secretary, he assumed the Chairmanship in 1984. Since then he has been an active member of NALC's General Committee and has attended the annual functions with his wife, Doreen.
Vice-President : Peter Basable

Peter Basable was born in 1930 and became a laryngectomee in November 1993, aged 63. He was an artist prior to two and ahalf years' National Service in the Royal Engineers. He later became a cycle mechanic. He moved to Crawley in 1957 when he married Doreen and worked in the APV Foundry for 29 years. He has serviced Talking Book Machines for the RNIB for the past 35 years and serves on their Committee.

His main sport was cycle racing and he has always enjoyed photography. Since retiring, he has taken up painting again.

He is Chairman of Crawley Laryngectomee Club which he started in 1995.
